ManufacturingMethods
Polmac (UK) Ltd manufactures custom-made, wood presentation boxes and packaging, using traditional, woodcraft techniques and semi-automaterd methods of production!
Polmac Woods
We use natural Lindenwood, Pinewood and Alderwood as standard base woods, because they can be sourced locally and are readily available. They are also suitable for making boxes because, they are light and strong, can be easily worked and provide an excellent surface for lacquering, wood staining or, block painting! However, other local woods, such as Beech, Birch and Poplar are also used, including imported hardwoods, where specified.
Kiln Dried Timber
Polmac timber is purchased as rough, sawn planks, which are stacked in the open, in horizontal, spaced layers, to allow the timber to 'breathe' The timber planks are then cured for 3 or 4 days, in a special drying kiln, to ensure the right moisture content, to prevent the wood warping!
How Your Boxes Are Made!
After curing, the rough, sawn planks are taken into the factory for cutting and shaping into thin panels. The panels are then jointed and glued together, to form 'rough' boxes and the lids cut out horizontally, from the top. Special, v-groove joints are formed at the back and thin, vertical slots cut, for the insertion of concealed hinges. The v-groove joints are designed as special features, to 'stop' the lids in the vertical position, when opened! Traditional recessed, surface mounted and special hinges can also be used!
After the hinges are fitted, your boxes will be fine sanded on a special sanding machine and then taken to the spraying booths, for spraying in a clear lacquer finish, natural wood and colour stain finishes or, block colours! Alternatively, they will be taken to a special finishing room, for hand decorating or, other specialised finishing, if required!
After spraying, your boxes will be dried on special drying racks, for 2 or 3 days and then the inside edges will be lacquered, stained or, painted by hand, with special sponges and all remaining ironmongery, such as catches fixed in position. When this is completed, the fabric linings will be fitted and your boxes carefully printed, if this has been specified, to provide the final finishing touches. They will then be ready for final, quality checking!
